Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of all purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp of baking powder
  • ¼ tsp of ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp of cinnamon
  • 2 tbls of sugar
  • ¼ tsp of salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ¼ cup of buttermilk
  • 4 large apples
  • 3 cups of Mazoal Corn Oil
  • 1 jar of caramel sauce powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions:

  1. To a medium sized bowl add flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar and salt.
  2. In another bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg together. Pour the liquid into the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  3. Slice the apples into ¼ thick rounds. Using a cookie cutter cut each slice into rings and use a smaller cutter to cut out the center core.
  4. Add corn oil to a heavy bottomed pot and set to medium heat. Line a baking sheet pan with paper towels.
  5. Once the oil reaches 350°F, begin dipping the apple rounds into the batter.
  6. Shake off any excess batter and carefully lower into the oil.
  7. Add several rounds but do not overcrowd the pot.
  8. Once the apple rounds are golden brown, transfer to the baking sheet.
  9. Repeat with remaining apple rounds.
  10. Let the apple rings cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar.
  11. Serve with warmed caramel sauce.
